Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of Prince Edward Island, home to 38,809 people in the 2021 census. The city sits between two rivers, the North (Yorke) River to the west and the Hillsborough River to the east, with the town of Cornwall on its western side and the town of Stratford across the Hillsborough to the east.
How today’s city came together
Many of the neighbourhood names you see on Charlottetown listings come from the city’s 1995 amalgamation. On April 1, 1995, Charlottetown joined with the Town of Parkdale and the communities of East Royalty, Hillsborough Park, Sherwood, West Royalty and Winsloe. A home listed in Sherwood or West Royalty is therefore inside the City of Charlottetown, while Cornwall and Stratford are separate towns with their own municipal governments.
Neighbourhoods buyers ask about most
- Downtown: the historic core on the harbour, within walking distance of the waterfront, shops and restaurants.
- Brighton: an established residential area just west of downtown, next to Victoria Park.
- Sherwood and Parkdale: mature, family-oriented neighbourhoods north of downtown.
- East Royalty and West Royalty: East Royalty is one of the city’s most active areas for new subdivisions, while West Royalty mixes newer builds with mid-vintage homes.
- Cornwall and Stratford: separate towns west and east of the city that many buyers include in a Charlottetown search. Cornwall in particular is one of the more affordable entry points in the region.
